Hydroseed services for the Haldimand and Niagara Region

  • Hydroseeding is a grass seeding method where a seed slurry is mixed and sprayed over an area. The slurry is uniform mixture of grass seed, mulch, fertilizer and water, continuously mixed in the seeding unit. The two stage (auger and jet) mixing ensure a uniform mixture for best results.

Our typical mixture is 20% Perennial Ryegrass, 40% Kentucky Bluegrass and 40% Creeping Red Fescue with an 8-32-16 starter fertilizer. This blend provides both shade and drought resilience as well as rapid germination. Custom grass blends such as tall grass and clover mixes can be accommodated upon request.

Mulch used is 100% recycled paper fibre, providing both moisture retention and erosion resistance to newly planted seed. For high run off conditions a wood fibre mulch is also available.

Tackifiers, pH balancing and water retention agents can be added to the slurry to ensure healthy rooting in less than ideal soil conditions.

  • With consistant watering in about 3-4 weeks you will see 1” sprouts all over the hydroseeded area. After about 2 months your lawn should be 3” and cuttable. Cutting should be done as high as possible to avoid damaging the new grass.

Growth speed depends largely on temperature and sun exposure. Early and late season sprays grow slower, but require less water than mid-season growth.

  • Our pricing starts at $0.20/sq.ft. with a minimum of $799. Larger jobs can expect a lower price per square foot.

We service the Niagara and Haldimand regions. For jobs greater than 50km from the Port Colborne area additional fuel charges will be included.

  • Soil preparation and a watering plan are the two biggest things to consider.

The existing soil should be 2-3 inches of loose high quality topsoil free from rocks, weeds and debris. We offer scalping and debris removal, hydraulic power raking and topsoil grading services for customers looking to start new. Our topsoil preparation also includes a warranty on seeding and any areas that do not take will be re seeded for free. Contact us for a free on site quote.

  • Watering is a crucial aspect of the success of a new lawn. If applied in early spring, the seed needs 1-2 waterings per day, once in the morning, once in the evening. An additional watering may be needed mid day during the summer seasons to avoid drying the seed out at high noon. The grass will only need 10-20 mins of watering per session, enough to saturate the mulch, but not enough to form puddles.

After 3-4 weeks 1” sprouts should be established and watering can be dialed back to 2-3 times per week. At 6-8 weeks the grass will be mature and cuttable.

Ideally a timed irrigation system or a sprinkler will be installed to minimize labour of watering and traffic on the new seed.

  • Ideally hydroseeding is done in the spring and fall seasons. We typically begin our seeding season when temperatures no longer reach below freezing over night, around the second or third week in April here in Ontario and continue work until early November.

Hydro seeding can be done in the hotter summer months, but will require more attention to watering to avoid drying out the seed.

Why Hydroseed

When choosing to grow a new lawn your three main options are hand seeding, lay sod or hydroseeding.

Hand seeding will be the cheapest option, but is significantly time consuming for large areas, is difficult to uniformly apply and lacks the erosion control benefits of mulch until a root system has been fully established. Hydroseed is significantly easier to apply uniformly over due too the constant uniform mixing and dye in the slurry showing where the mixture has been applied. The high pressure application of the slurry allows the seed to embed in the topsoil with the mulch and fertilizer to provide ideal germination conditions. The paper mulch also provides water retention and forms biodegradable erosion protection until the seed has fully rooted.

Sod may be the quickest option to establishing a new lawn, but will still require several weeks of watering and care before it can be walked on and mowed. This comes at a significantly higher cost than hydroseeding, often 5-6 times more per square foot. For large areas this can be a significant cost and is far more time consuming to install. For another 3-4 weeks of watering you can save a large cost on a new lawn.

In both cases hydroseed has clear advantages.
